How Ya Like Me Now Too?, 2025
How Ya Like Me Now Too? is an homage to David Hammons’ How Ya Like Me Now? and a challenge for white Americans to recognize and acknowledge their biases.
In 1989, Hammons created a 14’ x 14’ mural of then-presidential candidate Jesse Jackson as a white man for The Blues Aesthetic: Black Culture and Modernism exhibition in Washington DC, curated by Dr. Richard Powell and displayed across from the National Portrait Gallery. How Ya Like Me Now?, a phrase made popular by Kool Moe Dee’s song, was spray-painted at the bottom.
Whereas David Hammons questioned how successful Jesse Jackson would be if he were white, How Ya Like Me Now Too? asks how much unchallenged support Donald Trump would have if he were not. How Ya Like Me Now Too? is a 14’ x 14’ mural made from repurposed materials. The photos were taken where the piece was constructed.
