From Fantasy to Fashion, 2008

This series dissects the terms “good guys” and “bad guys” by placing military action figures in scenes reminiscent of images captured by war photographers like Robert Capa and W. Eugene Smith. These particular action figures were G.I. Joes from my own collection as a child. Growing up, it was the toy catalogs, such as the Sears Wishbooks that enticed me with their alluring arrangements of these figures in wartime action. This project relied heavily on my commercial studio experience, working in the same studios in Chicago where the Sears Wishbooks were once photographed, likely with some of the same photographers.
