A highly effective classroom is a safe and supportive environment where learning is possible. Students must be met where they are whenever possible in order to establish platforms for progress. The function of a school desk is to serve as a vehicle for the furthering of knowledge and understanding.
Limiting discussions about identity, race, and the different perspectives of this country’s past prevents empathy, understanding, and acceptance, which many states have taken steps toward. Rather than serving as a component of an equitable learning environment, the school desk becomes an incubator for prejudice and limitation.
In the fall of 2024, at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, MI, this piece was challenged by an individual with intolerant views. Included are photos of their protest along with an official report provided by the showing venue.
Every piece I create and put into any space is always accompanied by two open ears. If dialogue is an option, I will offer an explanation as well as any research and supportive data. The statement that accompanied this piece at ArtPrize was exactly like the above.
